Hurricanes have heavily influenced the ebb and flow of business in Biloxi. The greater Gulfport/Biloxi economic base continues to recover from the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed much of the region in August of 2005. Congress subsequently created the Gulf Coast Opportunity Zone, or GO Zone, to encourage investment in the area through tax incentives.

Conclusion

As of November of 2008, the City of Biloxi had issued nearly $200 million in construction permits for developments across the city. Though the slowing economy has stalled some planned developments in recent months, progress on others, including some major casino projects, continues along the Biloxi Coast.
The city has successfully erected the economic pillars so mercilessly blown down by Katrina, giving Biloxi hotels a platform on which to stand. The city continues to work to keep the avenues open for business, gaming, and tourism, and so long as these sectors stay afloat in the current economic turbulence, the Biloxi lodging market should emerge all the stronger.

Biloxi once known as the Seafood Capital of the World, with teeming seas and assiduous people, the industry continued to flourish. Even though the numerous hurricanes wiped out the town in 1893, 1901, 1915, 1947, Biloxi revived itself after every blow as quickly as possible. The most unforgettable hurricane to locals was that of 1969, when Hurricane Camille was recorded to be the utmost devastating one.

Biloxi has its own share of legends that make it a perfect tourist attraction. One such is the massive Ring-in-the-Oak in Beach Blvd in Biloxi. As the legend goes, hundreds of years ago, an Indian princess wanted to marry a brave from a different tribe. Her father said she could “when a ring grows in yonder oak,” and the next day, a perfect circle had been formed in one of the branches. Despite numerous storms and hurricanes, the perfect ring formed by the limb is still visible today in the towering oak.

The beach was built to support the sea wall, which was built in 1924 to halt the erosion of the coastline. The wall and the beach are now just steps away from busy Highway 90. Enchanting tales and modern magnificence, Biloxi has every justified reason to be highly recommended summer holiday destination, and not only because of the wonderful hotels of Biloxi.

Biloxi Rifles were a part of the 3rd Mississippi Infantry CSA during the Civil War with United States in 1861, which was made up of Mississippi Gulf Coast natives.Post Civil War Biloxi faced a relatively difficult time. In 1881 Lopez, Elmer and Company became the first seafood cannery in Biloxi and by the end of the decade four additional canneries were established.

Some of the first fishermen were Austrians from the Dalmatia Coast. In 1890 the Bohemians became the first imported laborers from Baltimore. By the turn of the century Biloxi had become the Seafood Capital of the World.
In the 1920s there were more than 40 seafood factories occupying the two cannery districts. In 1927 the seawall was constructed to protect the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Biloxi hotels then included: Edgewater Gulf Hotel, White House Hotel, Tivoli Hotel, Buena Vista Biloxi Hotel, Kennedy Hotel, Park Hotel, Avelez Hotel, and Rivera Hotel.

Biloxi got a Coast Guard Air Station between 1934 and 1947 and was located on Biloxi’s Point Cadet. In 1941, Biloxi was the site for an Army Air Corp technical training base known as Keesler Field which is today the location for many technical schools and employs many local people.

Hurricanes have devastated the Mississippi Coast for years. Some most notable were the 1722, 1893, 1915, 1947 hurricanes and the 1969 Hurricane Camille which dealt Biloxi a catastrophic blow though life came back to normalcy immediately. The economy of Biloxi recovered post the hurricane but slowly. In 1992 all of it changed post the legalization of dockside gaming.
The success of gaming in Biloxi has had an incredible effect on all elements of the city as it has only grown ever since. The fairy tale got a huge bolt from the blue in 2005 with hurricane Katrina that brought a stand still.

The fact that Biloxi has the ability to survive and fight back was proved post Hurricane Camille and it was reestablished after Katrina. Biloxi is now the place of growth and revival. It is not only rebuilding itself post the catastrophe, it is also building the future stronger than the present.

It’s nearing summer which means it’s that time again. What time, you may ask. The time to book your Biloxi vacation, of course. If you are ready to take a vacation, but aren’t quite sure where to go, then Biloxi may be right for you. This vacation destination incorporates a whole host of possible entertainment options to visitors and it is nearly impossible for a person to get bored in this city.

What to Do in Biloxi
A better question would be what is not available in Biloxi. If catching some rays is your thing, Biloxi and the Gulf Coast region have miles upon miles of gorgeous beaches. The Gulf of Mexico naturally provides warm waters to the shores, making it a perfect place to swim. It can get a bit humid at times, but the warm weather will be plenty to give you that perfect tan. Instead of laying on the beach, maybe you prefer trying your luck at some gambling. The casinos in Biloxi offer all of the games found in other gambling locales with a full dose of southern hospitality from the attentive staff. Nightlife can also be a big part of a Biloxi vacation as there are many bars and clubs along the coast where a tourist can try a few libations and dance the night away.

For those visitors of a more serious nature, there are many museum and historical options to satisfy the curious mind. There is also a major aquarium in the area, featuring a 44,000 gallon tank filled with creatures from the Gulf of Mexico. Vacationers who would like to play some golf while relaxing will be pleasantly surprised at the number and quality of courses in Biloxi. Many are designed by top name golf architects and are a great way to spend an afternoon.

In the post bellum period, Biloxi manifested as a vacation spot yet another time. Its reputation as a destination increased by leaps and bounds with railroad access. In 1881, the first cannery was constructed in the town, drawing others to team up with the location in a short period. Biloxi at this moment, evolved as a cynosure of diverse national groups which came to work in the seafood factories. Taking into account all the above-mentioned Biloxi procured a more heterogeneous nature.
In the course of World War II, the United States Army Air Forces built Kessler Air Force Base, which emerged as a finest elementary training site for aircraft maintenance. The Biloxi economy flourished as a result of merging more diverse groups to the area. By 1958, the first Jewish synagogue had been set up in the town.

Biloxi’s casino history dates back to a period in the 1940s. Technically illegal gambling took place in a casino within the Broadwater Beach Resort when it was kicked off to start. Open gambling ended in the midst of the 1950s. The Mississippi Gulf Coast was popularly called as the “Poor Man’s Riviera” and was patronized by Southern families interested in fishing expeditions all along the summer. In the market, Biloxi ruled the roost by shrimp boats and oyster loggers.

In the early 1960s, with Biloxi a center of the focus, the Gulf Coast again emerged as a prime alternative to Florida as a southern vacation destination among Northerners. Biloxi hotels upgraded their amenities and hired chefs from France and Switzerland in an effort to provide a few of the inimitable seafood cuisine in the country.

British rule prevailed from 1763 to 1779 and then Spanish rule came into picture from 1779 to 1798. Despite of these, the character of Biloxi sticks around French. Biloxi came under the control of United States of America in 1811. It became a part of the Mississippi Territory. A union was brought into existence by introducing Mississippi and Biloxi in 1817.

Now that ownership was put forward, Biloxi began to shoot up. It emerged into a summer resort, with the boon of its close proximity to New Orleans and ease of access through water. Summer homes were established by prosperous farmers and lucrative figures. Hotels and rental cottages paved the way for the people who could not have the means to get hands on their own homes.

One of the Biloxi’s prominent hallmarks has been Biloxi Lighthouse, which was built in Baltimore. It was then dispatched to south and was completed in May 1848. (It is the only surviving lighthouses of twelve that once dotted the Mississippi Gulf Coast).

In the preliminary stages of the Civil War, Ship Island was put behind bars by Union forces, which headed to the effective Union capture of Biloxi as well. There were no crucial wars fought in the area, for that reason Biloxi is not wounded by the direct destruction from the war. A portion of local Union sentiment could see the light following the war’s conclusion.
